University of Wisconsin–Madison

Web Developer Opening

Application deadline: Sunday, January 25, 2015 | Official position listing

University Marketing, the central marketing and brand office at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is looking to add an enthusiastic, talented full-time web developer to our web group.

About the Web Group

We play a critical role in all of the university’s major communication and marketing efforts.

We love using open-source code — WordPress, PHP, Jekyll, Ruby on Rails, Javascript in particular — to design and build things that help this world-class research university strut its stuff!

We feel privileged to be responsible for many of the university’s most prominent online products, including the UW-Madison home page, campus map, #UWSocial, and events calendar, to name a few.

Your role

Put simply, we need another person to help us build stuff. But we don’t want just a code-monkey (though we all love code, when it comes down to it). We want someone who can see the bigger picture, who understands how a website or an app fits within the larger context of University Marketing’s efforts to advance the teaching, research and public outreach missions of this Big Ten university.

Your work will span a range of front- and back-end skills, including HTML, CSS, Javascript, WordPress theme and plugin development, and Ruby on Rails, depending on your particular strengths. You’ll collaborate with user-experience professionals, designers, editors and fellow developers to plan, design, develop and deploy a variety of digital solutions. You’ll use modern collaborative development and deployment tools and processes — e.g., Git, Grunt, Capistrano, Jenkins — to iterate quickly through new ideas, designs and features.

Perhaps most important, we hope you’ll add to the creative energy of our group as we work together to try new ideas, tools and techniques. We embrace learning and expect you to as well!

What we need from you

We need you to be passionate about web and application design and development. We need you to love code — not necessarily in and of itself, but as a means to creating beautifully engineered solutions to marketing and communication problems. We need you to take initiative, to crave learning new things and to play nice with others.
